I don't think they where given a choice!
So, you don't think they had any optionality?
From reading a recent book on the Wright Brothers their primary concern was not where to land but to do it in one piece.
Then perhaps they should have invented the parachute first?
One of the inventions by the Wright brothers was the reclining chair. See... taking off was easy, it was the landing... bump, ouch, owww....
