Evaluating The Trades... Part 3: Time And Tide Wait For No Man.

You've heard the story of King Canute before. But if it doesn't ring a bell right off that's only because it's been awhile since you heard it. Remember now? Nah? Well it goes like this....

King Canute ruled in Denmark, Sweden, and England around the turn of the millennium (.... that's the first one! 1000 A.D.) The King was wise, all-powerful, been around the block a few times - much was demanded of him.

His subjects expected him to solve each and every problem which arose! The King told them that's not the way the real world works! To prove the point, the King had his throne carried to the edge of the North Sea and set up on the beach, where he said he planned to command the tides "not to come in" for the rest of the week....!

GUESS YOU KNOW HOW THAT WORKED OUT!

It's no news to anyone that the number of credit unions continues to shrink year after year.

From a peak of 23,000+ individual credit unions in the mid-1970's, we now stand just south of 6,500 survivors. Forty consecutive, uninterrupted years of decline, with losses now approaching 75% - and many more to come.
            THE TIDE IS COMING IN!

A shrink rap....?
The disappearance of 17,000 active, local, independent financial cooperatives has clearly reshaped the contours of the credit union movement.  The future appears to favor even greater consolidation (or liquidation depending on your point of view).
THE TIDE IS COMING IN!

A Disappearing Act !
In the parallel universe of chapters, leagues, and CUNA, the large losses in CU numbers have raised questions of the suitability and sustainability of the current trade association model. The simple fact is there are fewer "bodies" and dollars available to support the high, multi-layer, overhead costs;  and equally problematic is that large CUs are starting to balk at paying more and small CUs simply can't afford to pay more.  And, now even CUNA Mutual is withdrawing big-bucks financial support, starting in 2016.
THE TIDE IS COMING IN!

Calls for a self-review by CUNA/Leagues have been met with a positive response - not to worry, a committee has been formed!  The committee is confronted with some seriously tough questions of membership, structure, dues, representation, and choice. Some hard decisions, no simple solutions - several "someone's oxes" will probably need to be gored!

This CUNA committee is to report to all credit unions on September 17, 2015 in Madison, WI!!

The road ahead
for CUNA...??

So, let's be thankful; the committee's work has at least been concluded! Let's hope for the best, although history tells us that revolutions rarely arise from "within the status quo".  It's generally asking too much to expect someone to gore his own ox! Betting folks are pretty sure the Committee will simply command the tide not to come in until further notice!

Interesting to note that as a first step, CUNA did pass a bylaw amendment to permit credit unions the choice to...

Reform!

... pay dues to more than one league.

WHAT CAN WE MAKE OF THE FUTURE OF A TRADE ASSOCIATION WHERE:

The choice for a CU to pay twice was approved by a majority vote of 96% of CUNA's members...!!!

THE TIDE IS COMING IN!

CUNA:    1) Confused message on mission.
                               2)  Non-competitive pricing
                               3) Tsunami management by committee

[CUNA 0 for 3, heading for a shut out? How do you call it?]

Still better, maybe they could get themselves another Congress person. The last two were such stars in their elective positions and were so respected when they left that they were actually able to get as much done for the credit unions as when they were in Congress. Was Mica kept on contract to show Nussel where the bathroom was? Did he have to lead Nussel by the hand? And was it necessary for him to hold anything for Nussel? They had to be paying Mica for something other than smarts.

I think the approval to allow credit unions to pay dues to more than one league is not authorizing them to pay more league dues, rather, it would allow large credit unions which have significant numbers of members in another state(s) to apportion their league dues among the various states. If you have a branch or multiple branches in different states you might want to support more than one league. So, you would reduce what you send to your 'home' league based on the number of members in the second state and send that money to the other league. Seems fair to me...so what's the beef?

accounting nightmare and the leagues won't be able to properly budget each year. MotherCUNA screws the leagues again.
