Maybe you HAVE to start your own trade assocation?
Nice idea that of which you speak. Supportive comments by your biggest contributor Mr./Ms. Anonymous. Reality has shown that talk is cheap and most who talk take little action. So save your posts for you need not write new ones next year. This is credit union land where when it comes to the trades, or for that matter any thing of importance, nothing significant happens. Sorry, that just the way it is.
Seriously, Jim.
Actually thought this was a deadly serious issue... don't you?
I do. What I meant to suggest was you need to "seriously" do this. I am in full support. You are one of the people in the industry with the pull to get this started.
We left our League (Michigan) some 20+ years ago at the same time membership in CUNA ceased due to the handcuff foisted on us by both organizations. The way we look on it is that it has saved us a lot of money. Money that we would have wasted on membership in organizations that we (in our estimation) did little to enhance the atmosphere in which credit unions operate. As a matter of fact it seems that things have gotten measurably worse. At last count we are nearing 6 thousand credit unions remaining. Based on that record alone their performance deserves no support from credit unions. Trade Associations should offer opportunity for us to cooperatively embellish our defenses and promote attacks in the best interests of our members and their fiscal fortunes. They have become nothing more than places where political hacks and has beens can go to earn a mill or two a year and thereby justify great salaries and benefits for the layers of management just below them. Credit Unions have lots of adversaries including many from within. Its bad enough that we have paid an awful price for our own demise its criminal that we would consider paying these bums and thereby support the piggery. No one likes to be an outsider but no one likes to pay for something that does not benefit the organization he/she works for. We should have effective leadership that tends to the credit union message and fights to preserve what remains of our numbers and philosophy. We should have a point man (trade association) that vigilantly guards us from unwarranted laws and regulatory edicts that make no sense. Do we really need Basel induced RBC? What is our threat to the National economy? Is it as great as the large multi national pig banks that served to virtually destroy our economy? Aren't we what everyone says is the answer "break them up so that they never become a threat again?". Uh we are already there.
Vote with your feet and your dues dollars. If NAFCU is offering itself as the alternative to the sloth like do nothing CUNA we are prepared to encourage and fund their leadership but we have to know what their plan is.
Jimbo, your thoughts are good and yes it is a serious issue. But who would step forward to initiate? Which credit unions would financially support the new initiative and write the needed checks? And where would you find the right person to lead the charge?
The CUNA/League business model no longer works. I have always called for the elimination of the dual membership requirement (though CUNA's recent survey suggests that 86% of the membership would join their League and not CUNA; this would obviously cause CUNA to financially implode as well as the smaller Leagues to merge). Merge CUNA into NAFCU for federal representation and association management and let our Leagues continue to handle our respective state capitals. Done.
To Dennis, and his non-membership for the past 20 years; A wise man once told me that every credit union is a member of the league/CUNA/NAFCU but some just don't pay dues. I can understand the frustration of not seeing major victories since HR-1151 days but that gives no credit for numerous modifications to regulations and legislation that reduced the burdens of credit unions achieved during that time. Nor does it give credit for the fact that taxation has not surfaced at all. CUNA and the state leagues are responsible for representing the interest of credit unions at state and federal levels. NAFCU is just focused on federal issues. If I was limited to just one, I go with CUNA because we need charter choice to keep the feds honest and the state chartered CUs help with advocacy at the federal level since most of them are at least partially regulated by NCUA. It's not perfect but it is better than a divided house which will surely fall.
