CUNA: Lack of Transparency Kills Credibility... "Dead Man Walking"?

Forget The People,
It's The System!
Back in the Spring of 2015 - amidst great hoopla! - CUNA conducted a national credit union opinion survey. Participants were assured, often personally by CEO Jim Nussle, that the survey results would be made public.

To date those assurances have proved empty, except for a select few "insiders" - which probably didn't include little old you - nor me!

Riding High!
Let me show you a couple of charts reflecting data from that CUNA national survey... and perhaps you"ll understand why the CUNA Board and Mr. Nussle are behaving so "peculiarly" and perhaps not in the best interests of America's Credit Unions.

This chart clearly indicates that CUNA may have a  problem if its member credit unions are given the freedom to choose.  31% of CUNA credit unions indicated they would drop CUNA membership and go only with their League - not exactly a ringing endorsement of CUNA! Leagues did receive a strong endorsement with 84% of CUs (53% "both" + 31% "league only") indicating support.

Almost no one (8%) wanted to "go it alone" with CUNA!

Perhaps, out of raw self-interest, the CUNA Board felt it had to vote against giving the member credit unions it represents a choice to leave.  And, perhaps that's okay if only a minority of CUNA credit unions supported offering a choice in the first place; or if only the mega-CUs were demanding the option to choose; or if "small" credit unions were adamantly opposed; or if Tom Dorety and that Task Force didn't know what they were talking about; or...

After all, every credit union's voice and opinion is important. The CUNA Board needs to represent the wishes of all credit unions - right?

Well, then perhaps you should take a look at this chart...

THIS IS THE CHART "YOUR" CUNA BOARD "LEADERS" DID NOT WANT YOU TO SEE....

WHAT? ALL IN FAVOR ?!?!?

Holy-Moly! 92% would NOT join CUNA only.

No wonder the CUNA board shot-down the Task Force's recommendations. Despite what Mr. Adams is preaching, the CUNA/League system IS broken. The disconnect between credit unions and CUNA is a widening gulf and one that only democracy and choice will fix.

What is even more fun to watch is the back pedaling of league presidents like the one on the East Coast. Porcupine now is taking a survey of his membership to see what they actually want. Everyone knows how he already voted under pressure from his colleagues despite his "personal" beliefs on what he thinks is best and being warned that opposing them would loss their support in the future if he tries to take out Nussle. And consider how well this all plays out in Congress. The elected representatives are watching and laughing as the system once again shows they cannot agree on anything. Just more ammunition for the bankers to make their point.

Being forced to do something even IF it is a good thing never works. Just ask your teenager. CUNA needs to change their tune now that this information is public. CU's will not play along anymore, but might do so if their value proposition is improved and the bloated inefficiencies are dealt with.

I am a CEO - so I read and write real s l o w l y . Did I understand this chart correctly? Are you stating that over 61% of all credit unions of all assets sizes would like a choice? And are you also stating that CUNA in its infinite wisdom voted against providing credit unions a choice? So it begs the question. Why bother with the damn survey? CUNA has proven once again and now has validation to support itself as a self-serving, self-perpetuating organization with a strategic plan built upon self-interest. Grossly over paid and grossly incompetent. CUNA please share with your dues paying, card carrying members exactly where the pay back is from CUNA dollars spent. If we send you $10 & you consume $5 on salary, benefits and pensions, where did the other $5 go? Golf junkets? CUNA director travel expenses?
