Cat's Out Of The Bag...?

S-h-h ! Keep your head down,
nobody will notice!
It's kinda interesting that the CUNA Board had a "special secret, hush-hush meeting" yesterday; had you heard about it through your League?  Just askin'... to see if you were "in the know" as a valued member.

... And it ain't with
this diverse bunch!

Then there was that announcement that the Southeastern CUL (Florida/Alabama) Board voted unanimously to give their members a choice in CUNA membership.  Appears the League CEO Patrick LaPine may have finally "had the facts of life explained" to him.  He seems to have much greater clarity now about where his true loyalties and best interests lie....

And then, the Southeastern CU League doubled down by signing a collaboration agreement with the NY CU Association, while Kansas and Missouri announced plans to cohabitate

What's going on here?  I thought the CUNA Board had ordered all the Leagues to behave?!?

Is the cat out of the bag at CUNA?

Wasn't sure if the CU world was really changing until I saw this...

... agenda for a meeting  - beginning today - at the
"Was in the neighborhood
and just thought I'd
drop by..."
New York Credit Union League Large CU Roundtable [Here's the link, take a look!]

Intriguing that the keynote, featured speaker - talking about national Washington politics - is none other than NAFCU CEO Dan Berger!!! (Rich Mead, Chief of Staff at CUNA, is speaking in the "siesta slot" right after lunch!)

Dan Berger is of course a good choice for key insights on D.C. politics, but speaking at a League meeting!?!

Would your credit union set up a table in your lobby to help Bank of America recruit new customers?

[Nah, me neither!]

maybe LaPine tree has finally recovered from his Cuba vacation. Has anyone seen or heard from Nussle?

What's the big secret?

Somebody call Dan Berger and ask him what's going on!

Have to wait, hear Berger is out of town.

What we see happening is league presidents jockeying for position. Porcupine is again thinking of only himself as he does the moves he feels will further weaken Nussle. Do not believe for a second it is to help credit unions. And his counterpart in the coalition deal, Mellon, has one foot out the door.

And is there any truth to the story that they urged Nussle to seek asylum in Cuba?

Berger at a CUNA event? Another slam at Nussle. The loyalty expressed by the leagues to their leader is heartening. The one thing that is clear, if you ever shake hands with one one of the league presidents, count your fingers, wash your hands in Clorox, watch your back and run like hell.

"Would your credit union set up a table in your lobby to help [another credit union] recruit new customers?" Isn't that what shared branching does?

Memo to Nussle: Beware of Pinebox. He and his cohorts are out to embarrass and bury you.

yeah, at least Berger is in NY speaking to a group of credit unions not in Cuba sightseeing.

Maybe Berger is like a Trojan Horse. He will start speaking and a bunch of Mica's will jump out of him and devour all the CUNA unfaithful.

What's so funny is that our leagues and our major trade association have circled the wagons and are now shooting at each other. The league boards, league presidents, Jim Nussle, and the CUNA board have to step up and make some tough choices and show some leadership. When a small trade association like NAFCU keeps kicking their collective butts at every turn, there is a leadership void that the NAFCU board and Berger are filling. CUNA needs to cut overhead, change their senior executives (yes, all of them) and shrink their outrageously large board (get rid of the league presidents). If they don't make these changes, NAFCU is quickly becoming that large trade association that CUNA once was.

What we need is for all you CU professionals to stop hiding behind the anonymous tags and speak out. I penned my first negative CU times letter to the editor about CUNA in 2005. I have been right about CUNA before it was popular. Oh, and BTW, we have B. Dan Berger on our radio show this Friday.

Jason's show by the way can be t'eed up at eloquentonline.net.

Has some interesting guests and it's live, real time so it's truly uncensored, "live fire'.

Great opportunity for some CU leaders to get out front and talk honestly about where we should go in the future...
