So, Russia will divide and keep the Slavic part of Ukraine for !) access to the Black Sea, 2) better control of the oil/gas pipelines to Europe, and 3) it's the only beaches they've got - use to be the summer retreat for the Czars! Lots of trade flows from the Mediterranean thru the Bosphorus and across the Black Sea into the heart of Central Europe! Ukraine also the "breadbasket heartland" of the region.
