I bet if they were paying for it themselves the bums wouldn't be staying in these digs. About the only thing they are capable of is making sure they get paid way too much, lying to each other about their importance, turning a condescending ear when a constituent has a problem and making sure they haven't got anything to do at their own useless 3 day conference. If there are good ones they won't show up at this terrible waste of money. Let's see who goes!

Jim,

Credit union leaders like you drive, and decide the future of credit unions. Trade association leaders like me, can lead on advocacy efforts, but we can only work with credit union leaders for a better credit union system, not decide its future in a vacuum. My colleagues and I are not so presumptuous as to think differently.

So, nobody should feel bad about being excluded from our posh Orlando meeting. We'll be talking about how to improve our game as associations. Surely we'll continue to work on dues choice (two leagues now allow it and CUNA continues to listen and adapt to input), a more aggressive legislative and regulatory agenda coordinated by CUNA and leagues, and many other issues pertaining to 1)removing barriers, 2)promoting CUs, 3)providing solutions that help credit unions be successful.

We'll also continue to build out our suite of CUNA/League compliance solutions, recognizing how important this service area is to all credit unions.

So, I'm proud to participate in many less-than-perfect processes in less-than-perfect venues that have extremely good intentions for helping the credit union industry be successful.

But again, this is an AACUL meeting for AACUL members. If we invited you and other CU CEOs, I doubt you would enjoy the meetings much, given the agenda. In fact, League Chairman (mostly CU CEOs) are participating.

Finally, how can we be criticized for meeting and collaborating to improve the very things (association effectiveness issues) that you and others feel are in need of improvement?

What am I missing?

You are missing the fact that you and the others continue to be tone-deaf. Leagues are imploding left and right because of industry consolidation and CUNA Mutual funding cutbacks, and yet, you still go to a FIVE STAR RESORT. That's what you are missing. Do you think your dues-paying members appreciate this?

Dave Adams said...

By the way, I believe the AACUL room rate is $259/night. And Orlando is one of the cheapest airports to get to.

Just to get some facts straight...

my goodness, you continue to attempt to justify the tone-deafness of all this with price-points. Many leagues, if not most, are struggling financially, as are many credit unions that are your dues-paying members, yet you decide to attend a meeting at a FIVE STAR RESORT. This is the same problem with the executives that went to Cuba. This is absurd.

Dave,

First thanks for commenting on the record.

The needling aside, at core the world has changed and the Leagues should no longer serve the role as "gatekeeper" or "filter" for CUNA... simple as that.

NAFCU - direct access - is the better model and by comparison CUNA appears to suffer from a lack of singular focus and perceived inefficiency and ineffectiveness. "Renewed emphasis on advocacy"... oh really, what has been more important in the past?

Much like "mobile banking", some may not like that technological, fact-of-life change, but the world is moving on... with you or without you.

The Leagues have a CHOICE to make... although credit unions are being denied that option... except by the good leaders in Michigan and Florida.

CUNA surveyed its member credit unions on CHOICE.. just didn't like the answer it got back!

We have some of the best Credit Union League Presidents MONEY CAN BUY. While credit unions continue to experience compression to the bottom line, declining ROA, and increasing operating expenses these League Presidents jet around the globe to 5-Star Resorts with no shame, remorse or guilt. As they continue to pimp their very own constituents they eat like pigs at the trough. Always easy to eat and sleep well at other peoples' expense. Could they step it down to a Holiday Inn or a Hotel 6? I guess that would be below them. Can you publish then names of all the Credit Union League Presidents participating in this frolic and detour from their real work responsibilities? This is beyond absurd. This defines CHUTZPAH! I wonder sometimes why I am not a dues paying card carrying member of the Credit Union League. Then I read these posts and they validate my lack of participation in such a colossal waste of money for a bunch of self serving self absorbed trade association pseudo-CEOs.

Populism is a wonderful thing to rouse the spirits! You have a courageous League president who thoughtfully comments on the site and we are ripping him about Motel 6and Holiday Inns. Wonderful! The meeting would be more expensive to have in Madison than in Orlando I would guess...but that isn't really important to most of the people commenting on the site. Kind of reminds me of when the NCUA rips a natural person credit union for their travel and conference budget as a way to improve those pesky operating expense ratios. Chances are there is a much bigger reason for the operating inefficiencies, but it is the "low hanging fruit" that is easier for the Agency to get riled up about.

How many of my fellow credit union CEOs who comment on this blog stay at a Motel 6? Good for you if you do, but every conference or educational opportunity seem to be held in a very nice place. If they don't hold them in nice places, then no one comes. Why is that? No one on this blog must live in a glass house. If they do, they are going to need a Band-Aid or two...

The information provided on this blog is thought provoking. The "needling" as Jim refers to above takes away from the discourse.

This is truly getting ridiculous. Besides Mr. Perlitsh, I agree not many CEOs (of anything) would stay at a Motel 6. Having said that, staying at a Four Seasons is stupid. The optics are horrible. Even scheduling a conference at a Four Seasons is stupid. If your trade association or league is scheduling any conference at a five star resort like the Four Seasons or Ritz Carlton, you should demand that they stop. It's laughable at the commenters that continue to try to justify this stupidity.

Jim Blaine said...

There really can't be much "discourse" with organizations which out-of-hand disdain the wishes of a large majority of their owners, as evidenced by the results (still officially suppressed) of their own member survey; summarily rejects their own hand-selected committee report (Dorety) on choice; and then parades out publicly - with as yet no evidence of resolution - that while it is "bloated, top heavy, siloed and inefficient" it has suddenly rediscovered that its core purpose may be advocacy?!.

But in fairness, the needling on The Four Seasons/price etc is not the issue - you're right! - it is simply symptomatic of the profound, obtuse detachment of the "The System®" from the reality within current day credit unions. At worst "The Meeting of the Minds" is simply acute egomania, more likely it is a boyish silliness - well-deserving of ridicule!, in either event.

Could these top 40 host a webinar? They could eliminate the travel expense to Florida. They could eliminate the time away from their real state trade association job. They could eliminate the lodging expenses associated with the 4-Seasons, including room, tax, meals, porter tips, taxi, etc. Ah never mind. They have a travel budget might as well blow through it because soon they will get a new travel budget to bust in 2016. What was I thinking?

I have a radio show they can borrow. I will charge them the cost of one room. They will be able to talk to one another and even take calls from the CU Marketplace if they want. Plus, the conversation will be recorded for all time. Too easy?

Here is an update. Dave Adams you and your team at the MCUL are a complete joke. In Sept during the dual membership news I was in contact with your "communications" and media relationship "specialist" Laura Michels
Media Relations Specialist
Michigan Credit Union League
734-793-4244

She said at the time you were not able to give a live interview. I asked if I could send questions to be answered by email. She said yes. In a conversation with her after you failed to answer those simple questions about dual membership she told me by phone that you were scared that you might say something wrong on the show and that I intimidated you because I had interviewed Mr. Blaine. Zero leadership. Mr Adams, this is my final thought on you: General Patton would have slapped you.

Jason, Tell us some day how you really feel about our top talent.

Jason, why do you always pick on CUNA and our league presidents? What about NAFCU?

I like NAFCU. Next question? And if you want to call me names, that's fine. You can call me Christian, Husband, Father, Combat Veteran, see how that works. I am ME and you are....well anonymous.
